Agent License Scam Reported

State insurance commissioners are warning producers that scam artists are posing as insurance department employees to defraud insurance agents and brokers, the National Association of Independent Life Brokerage Agencies warns.

Agents in Nevada, California and Ohio have been targets of a scam  in which individuals posing as state insurance department employees telephone agents and brokers and tell them that their license may be cancelled because of of unpaid fees or penalties, the association says. Agents are then told that by providing their credit card and social security numbers, the matter can be resolved over the telephone.

Insurance commissioners of all states are warning agents and brokers that these individuals are not employees of the state department of insurance. NAILBA notes that is not the practice of state insurance departments to request credit card or social security information over the telephone for a payment.
