WellPoint Wins Medicare Contract

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has awarded an administrative contract for the jurisdiction that includes Connecticut and New York.

The CMS has picked a unit of WellPoint Inc., Indianapolis, to handle the contract.

WellPoint’s National Government Services Inc. will handle tasks such as claims processing, medical review and appeals for the Medicare Part A hospitalization program and the Medicare Part B physician services program.

The CMS has awarded a contract with 1 base year and 4 1-year options.

The contract could be worth as much as $323 million over a 5-year period, WellPoint says.
